Elementary School Observations

Throughout the day I got to see math, art, cooking, music, English, Japanese, penmanship, swimming, reading, special education, and others. The first grade math lesson I observed was teaching how to subtract numbers like 3 from 5. It was interesting to see the lesson progress from pictures and stories to equations. After school we did also get to observe club activities like music, art, woodcraft, and PE. Overall it was a very good day and I came away with some ideas of things that I will consider implementing in my own classroom next school year. After our visit was complete, we returned to the hotel and a group of us went out to an Australian restaurant. Tomorrow we visit a high school. The picture I included below was of a penmanship bulletin board that amused me because Japanese penmanship is a little different from the penmanship we see in the States.

So was it hot walking to school in your suit? It is very hot here. What do the students think of all you Americans? Are they used to lots of visitors at school?

the kids must be in really good shape walking to school and all. kevin would have loved to hear the jazz band. that is great that you have come up with some things to implement in your own class. do you think you could get the school cafeteria in fishers to serve noodles with shrimp and mushrooms? :). That sounds wonderful! stay safe and continue having a great time!

It is very hot and humid....yesterday was the hottest day so far.

I don't think they are used to seeing Americans very often. I'm sure they have seen people from the west before in person, and certainly on TV. They did pretty well behaving for us when we were at the schools.

The kids here are in good shape overall, although just as in the States, Japan is seeing a trend towards video games and away from excercise.

KN would have certainly enjoyed the band--they were very good.

I don't know about the noodles and shrimp....we'll see!
